Frequently Asked Questions about Shelter 

General Information on shelter admission

Shelter may be accessed by calling 317-637-5551 to speak with an Advocate. Intakes are done 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No rooms are put on hold and there is no waiting list. If you are calling from outside the Indianapolis area, you may call 1-800 589-1037 during business hours.

Emergency shelter and shelter for domestic abuse and violence is available for residents up to 45 days. Please notify the advocate you are speaking with of any special needs you and/or your child may have.

Individuals may bring clothing, important documentation/paperwork, medications and additional necessary items. No furniture, large televisions or appliances. Storage space is limited in rooms.

If you have a vehicle you will be asked the make, model and license plate number. You must have current license plates and insurance for the vehicle.  Parking is limited.     

Homeless Shelter admission requirements include:
• Single women must be at least 18 years old or legally emancipated.
• Women with children (ages of the children females- up to 18 years old and males- up to 17 years old).
• Must be able to show legal and physical guardianship of the child.
• Individual must have identification for herself and children (birth certificates, driver’s license, identification card, social security card, immunization records, etc).
• Must be able to pass a urine drug test.
• Not having resided in the shelter for the last 90 days.

Shelter for Domestic Abuse/Violence admission requirements include:
• Must be seeking shelter due to safety and/or needing services due to domestic abuse or violence.
• Single women must be at least 18 years old or legally emancipated.
• Women with children (ages of the children female- up to 18 years old and male- up to 17 years old).
• Must be able to show legal and physical guardianship of the child.
• Individual must have identification for herself and children (birth certificates, driver’s license, identification card, social security card, immunization records, etc).
• Must be able to take a urine drug test. If the test is positive the client will be required to obtain a drug and alcohol assessment.
